About Our After School Program

Our After School is an academic-based program that offers two-hour classes in English and Math, for students in JK – Grade 6 (older students are accepted). The program is separated into two semesters from; September – January and February – June. Students are placed in groups according to their grade and taught lessons accompanied by class work to support their learning. In addition, students are given cumulative class work that supports the complete Ontario English and Math Curriculum. All lessons are planned and implemented by Ontario Certified Teachers and both formal and informal assessments are completed after each unit. Formal reporting is completed after each semester in January and June.

Language:

Each week, we begin the After School classes with a list of new spelling words for each grade level. Throughout the week, we use these new words with our language lessons to develop the students’ vocabulary, reading, comprehension, writing and grammar skills. The lessons are an extension to the curriculum that is being taught at school. For example, students are able to expand their vocabulary, build upon their editing skills while focusing on grammar in its many facets. Our Kindergarten After School classes focus first on the development of letter and sound recognition (beginning phonics) and then progress to more advanced phonics (vowel blends, consonant blends, digraphs, word families, etc.) with the addition of sight words. Printing skills are also emphasized.

Math:

Our math classes focus on the different strands of math as outlined in the Ontario Curriculum. We teach students strategies to develop their mathematical abilities of reasoning, problem solving, reflecting and communicating. The strands include; Number Sense and Numeration, Measurement, Geometry and Spatial Sense, Patterning and Algebra and Data Management and Probability. For our students in Grade 3 and above, we teach the 4-step problem solving technique which focuses on understanding the problem, making a plan, carrying out the plan and looking back at the solution. Our Kindergarten After School classes first focus on the development of number recognition and understanding and then progress to the different strands of math. Furthermore, we connect math to the real world to give students a deeper understanding of math and how it relates to our daily lives. For example, during our Data Management Unit we collect the daily weather over a period of a month, interpret the data and then have the students create graphs to represent the data in various forms. Our older students collect additional data (statistics) via the internet to make more elaborate comparisons and find probabilities.

Diversity and Character Building

At High Five Academy, we believe it is imperative to educate our students of the diverse cultures within our community and to develop lessons that support character development. Our philosophy is on educating students academically while developing positive character skills. Students cannot be successful without a strong belief in themselves and their abilities. This comes with an, acceptance and tolerance of differences, ability to distinguish between right and wrong and understanding that learning comes from mistakes. Throughout the year, we develop lessons that support students’ overall emotional and social growth. Areas we cover include, diverse cultural celebrations, making a difference, anti-bullying and helping the environment.
