Exceptions will be made for students who register with High Five Academy while they are taking their prerequisite only if the prerequisite will be completed before the start of their High Five Academy course. Students must submit a transcript at the time of enrolment demonstrating that they have achieved the required prerequisite.

FAQ – General Questions

How does it work?

We offer continuous intake which means a student may register for any of our offered courses throughout the year. Each course contains instructional content that covers all the Ontario curriculum expectations. All of our teachers are qualified in their respective fields, and each is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers. Assignments and quizzes appear throughout the course content. Once the course is finished, High Five Academy will send official copies of the final report card to both the student’s home address and their school, where it can be added to the list of courses on their Ontario Student Transcript (OST).

Will these courses count towards my diploma or university application?

Yes. High Five Academy is inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education and is qualified to issue OSSD credits, which are the same credits earned by students in public schools in the province of Ontario.

How long does a course take?

For the 2 Semester Option: Each course takes 16 weeks. Classes will be 3 times a week, twice throughout the week for two and a half hours each, and once on Saturday for 2 hours.

For the 3 Semester Option: Each course takes 10 weeks. Classes will be 3 times a week, twice throughout the week and once on Saturday each 4 hours long.

All courses are 110 hours and the course outline highlights the breakdown of each unit. Please keep in mind that the 110 hours reflect the number of hours a student will spend on the lessons and does not include additional time students may take to complete assignments or prepare for tests or examinations.

How much does a course cost?

$850 for in-class

$1500 for international students

$450 for online

Are the credits recognized by universities and colleges?

At High Five Academy, students earn OSSD credits, which are the same credits that a student would earn in a public school in Ontario. As a result, these credits will not be viewed any differently by post-secondary institutions.

Will you communicate with my school throughout my course?

High Five Academy will inform the student’s home school when they register for a course, when the midpoint has been reached, and when the course has been completed. A midterm report card and final report card will both be sent to the home school. The OSSD credit earned at High Five Academy will then be added to the student’s list of credits, which is maintained by the home school on an Ontario Student Transcript (OST).

What resources do I need to bring to each lesson?

Each class, you will need to bring a notebook or laptop, binder, pencils, eraser, and textbook.

FAQ – Registration Questions

When can I enroll?

We are open for enrollment at any time throughout the year. Courses run on a semester basis from September to January, February to June, and July to August.

For the 2020/2021 school year, we are offering the option of a three semester school year to reflect the changing needs of students enrolled in the public school system. Courses will run from September to December, January to March, and March to May.

How do I register?

You can print off our registration forms from our High School tab on our website or come on in to our school to fill out the forms.

What happens after I register?

Once the registration process is complete, students will receive an initial email confirming their registration and payment. Once registered, students will be informed of class start date, which is currently on September 30, 2019.

FAQ – Student Support

What support will I have through the course?

Each student has a certified teacher throughout their course, who will be able to provide more on-on-one attention throughout each class. Teachers are trained to teach in multiple ways and help each student succeed in class.

How can I communicate with my teacher outside of class time?

Outside of class, you can communicate with your teacher through email when necessary.

What happens after I earn a credit?

Once High Five Academy receives the final report issued by the teacher, our records department will process this information and mail an official copy to the home address we have on file. We will also fax and mail a copy to the student’s home school. At the student’s request, High Five Academy can also communicate with a post-secondary institution or send the report to OUAC/OCAS.

FAQ – Guidance

How will OUAC / OCAS or the university know that I am taking a course at High Five?

When a student enrols or reaches midterm or final point in a course, High Five Academy can send that information to OUAC, OCAS, and/or to any post-secondary institution upon the student’s request. Once High Five Academy has the student’s request on file, any future updates on the student’s progress (i.e. midterm or final report cards) will be forwarded accordingly. However, it is always beneficial to double-check that the grade has been updated when you reach the midterm or final point in the course.

I am an English Language Learner (ELL). How can you accommodate this?

Our teachers are coached on ways to best support ELLs in order to provide all students with the support they need to be successful. Additionally, helpful tips and strategies are provided within courses for ELLs if they are having any difficulty with learning in English.

I have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). How can you accommodate my exceptionality?

If you have an IEP, please bring it in with you so that your teachers can help you with any accommodations or modifications that you need. We are here to work with you and will follow your IEP in whichever ways stated.

Please note: High Five Academy will not send course updates to OUAC or OCAS unless you have provided your reference number to us. Once we know your reference number, we will send updated grades there as they are processed.

What is a prerequisite course? Do I have to complete this course before I register?

A prerequisite course is one that a student must complete prior to taking the next level of the subject. Prerequisite requirements are outlined by the Ministry of Education in order to ensure that students are properly prepared to take a course at the next level. For example, a student must complete SCH3U prior to being able to take SCH4U in order to ensure that the student has the foundation to be successful in the higher level course. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain and send High Five Academy a copy of their Ontario Student Transcript (OST), report card, or credit counseling summary. Such documents prove to High Five Secondary School that the student has achieved the prerequisite for the course.

FAQ – Final Exam

How does the final exam work?

The final exam is included in the 110 hours of course time. It will occur on the last class date of each semester. Once the exam is marked and all final marks are processed, High Five Academy will send all required documents to students and their home schools.
